We had a number of northern exiles in my old local, Merseysiders mainly and a couple of Brummmies.

Only one bloke I know got fucked off and he was from Englandā€™s version of Texas. Yorkshire.

Eee everythingā€™s bigger and better in Yorkshire.

Fucking muppet.

Spot on what grumpster said. Doesnā€™t matter where you are, act like a prick and youā€™ll get binned off. Normal humans welcome. I like the North generally except from the child raping taxi drivers.

If you're a cunt or act the cunt away from your manor, then clearly they'll hate you and treat you like a cunt.

If you're basically a normal person happy to talk normally to people regardless of where they're from, then you'll never have a problem unless it's the local cunt you're trying to talk too!

Regarding Southerners being hated around the rest of the country.... never had a problem... well unless it was with Football or Beano's... but if it's solo/with work/couples/family... never a problem ever

`You are right. For up north Ulverston used to be ok. I started going up there (her family are all up that way) from about 1995. Back then i think ulverston had the most pubs per square mile in England`!

Rochford was in the Guinness book of Records for having the most pubs in a square mile... think it was 13.... not now mind you ... a lot have closed or been turned into restaurants ...

Used to get up to the dales once or twice a year and absolutely love the place. When I was asked where I'm going I'd say England.Sorry to say but London is a third world shit pile now and a move up North is a matter of when not if.

Everyone hates Londoners/cockneys/southerners.

Everyone hates mancs.

Everyone hates scousers.

Everyone hates jocks, taffs, geordies. The list goes on.

We're a tribal species. Just how it is.

We've got carp up north. Big'uns too! My nephew is mad keen on carp fishing & catches double figure carp regularly
I prefer fishing for trout

As a student (many, many years ago) I spent four generally good years on Tyneside.

Were I to return to England, all other things being equal, I'd rather be closer to my roots down south. But wouldn't rule out Tyneside. And my sister has made a pretty good life for herself & my niece and nephews in Sheffield.

Of course, Middlesbrough remains probably the biggest shithole I've ever visited in Britain (and probably in my top five of places I've visited around the world where I wouldn't want to live)

Not exactly north but Iā€™ve been in East Midlands for 9 months and wish Iā€™d done it years ago.
Friendly people, clean, cheap property, decent pubs and 1.5 hours back for the games.
Best of all, no mosques, no gob in the streets, low crime figures.
Iā€™m learning the language too.

You're not wrong there. I never realised that statistic regarding Ulverstons pubs, but when I come to think about it, I think there were at least 3 in every street & many have now gone
I've probably had a drink in most of them at one time or another too. That said I used to know at least 4 alcoholics!
The real shame was when Hartleys brewery was taken over by Robinsons & then shut down. You couldn't beat a good pint of Hartleys!
I used to love it there as a kid during my school holidays, there was so much to do, fishing in the canal or fishing for trout in Levy Beck
There always used to be a busy market & the cattle market used to be in the middle of town. You always used to get sheep & cows rampaging through town on a Thursday
I used to love the cobbled streets & the smell of steam trains & the views from the top of Hoad monument
The cobbled streets are still there but sadly, so many things have changed there for the worse

Jack,

You are right. For up north Ulverston used to be ok. I started going up there (her family are all up that way) from about 1995. Back then i think ulverston had the most pubs per square mile in England!

Unlike down here, wheee you plot up to a boozer and stay all night, up there it was one drink and move to the next gaff a few doirs down and as everyone did that, the whole place was lively.

I then noticed around half of those pubs shut down over the next decade or so.

Re: Would you ever consIder moving up Norf?
I moved up north to the lake district back in 1973

All my mothers family were from Ulverston, which used to be a brilliant little town where I used to spend most of my school holidays at my grandma's
It got the nickname of the London of the lake district as it was always quite cosmopolitan

Having worked previously in Barking, Hackney, Tottenham Court Road, I always intended to move to the lake district, where I'd spent a lot of my childhood, & set up my own business

I've lived in west Cumbria for 40 years now & never go back to London now as I have no relatives there now & old friends tend to visit me

I have a nice old remote farmhouse with acres of land & a lake & I'm surrounded by wildlife & nice countryside & amazing scenery. I would never have been able to achieve so much if I'd stayed in London

It sounds ideal, but it's not for everybody. When it rains, it never stops, it gets so cold sometimes you can't be bothered going out, the winter seems to go on for ever, when the days are so short & it can be dark all day

No way would I ever consider going back to live in London, & I probably couldn't afford to buy a house there anyway!

In truth, the only thing I miss is not watching West Ham at the Boleyn, especially the night games. But that's all in the past now anyway

I can always watch live streams on the TV, but it's not the same

If I had my time again & I wasn't married to a local lass, I would rather go to live in the caribbean, even though it's about impossible to get residency there

Re: Would you ever consIder moving up Norf?
Medway

There are houses in the areas around Burnley/Nelson area with long driveways and huge gardens and 4-5 bedrooms that go for well under Ā£150k. You'd literally be paying over a million for anything remotely like that in Kent or Essex.

Don't be put off by the word "Burnley". The countryside around there is fantastic and all the people in the villages are extremely friendly (almost annoyingly so). If you're looking to retire and ain't arsed about being near London you could do loads worse.
